Allergies to vaccines in newborns

Overview

Allergic reactions to vaccines in newborns

Fear of allergic reactions is one of the most common reasons for refusing vaccination. It is important to clearly distinguish normal, expected reactions to immunization from true, extremely rare allergic reactions.

Normal reaction vs. Allergic reaction

Normal reactions (redness, fever) indicate the immune system is working. True allergic reactions are extremely rare (1-2 cases per million doses) and present as hives or anaphylaxis. That is why after any immunization the child should be under medical staff observation for 30 minutes. The allergy is not to the virus or bacteria itself, but to excipients: egg protein, gelatin, antibiotics. The presence of atopic dermatitis is not a contraindication to vaccination.
