Excessive Sleepiness in Pregnant Women

Overview

Constant Need for Sleep During Pregnancy (Excessive Sleepiness)

The feeling that you could fall asleep anywhere, anytime is one of the earliest and most powerful pregnancy symptoms. Excessive daytime sleepiness, especially in the first trimester, can be so strong that it interferes with work and daily activities. This is not a sign of laziness, but a physiological signal from your body that it is doing the titanic work of creating new life.

Causes of Excessive Sleepiness

At the core of this condition is a complex of hormonal and physiological changes:

  • Progesterone: This is the main “culprit” of sleepiness. The level of this hormone rises sharply in the first trimester, and it has a pronounced sedative effect, acting on the brain similarly to a tranquilizer.
  • Intensive growth: During the first 13 weeks, all of the baby's organs are laid down and the placenta forms. This process requires a colossal amount of energy, which manifests as fatigue and a need for sleep.
  • Poor nighttime sleep quality: Frequent awakenings due to nausea or bathroom trips lead to nighttime sleep that is not restorative, and the body tries to “catch up” during the day.

Sleepiness in the Third Trimester

Sleepiness may return in the third trimester, but its causes are different: significant weight gain, physical discomfort, and poor nighttime sleep quality due to insomnia.

When Is It More Than Just Sleepiness?

It is important to distinguish physiological sleepiness from pathological fatigue, which can be a symptom of anemia or prenatal depression. If sleepiness is accompanied by severe weakness, pallor of the skin, or a depressed mood, you should inform your doctor.
