Sleep problems in pregnant women

Overview

General sleep problems during pregnancy: Why rest becomes a challenge

Sleep disturbances are one of the most common complaints throughout pregnancy. Feeling exhausted during the day and being unable to fall asleep at night — this is not just discomfort, but a significant factor affecting the physical and emotional health of the expectant mother. Sleep problems during pregnancy are multifaceted and caused by a unique combination of hormonal, physical, and psychological changes.

What exactly disrupts sleep?

The causes of sleep problems change and layer upon each other as pregnancy progresses:

  • Hormonal factors: High progesterone levels in the first trimester cause daytime drowsiness (excessive sleepiness), but at the same time can make nighttime sleep more superficial. Hormonal fluctuations also affect sleep stages.
  • Physical discomfort: This is the main cause in the third trimester. Back pain, heartburn, leg cramps, the need to frequently change positions, active fetal movements — all of these hinder finding comfort and relaxing.
  • Physiological needs: Frequent urination urges force you to wake up several times during the night, interrupting sleep cycles.
  • Psychological factors: Anxiety about the upcoming birth, the child's health, and one's own maternal skills can prevent the brain from "switching off".

These factors lead to a whole spectrum of disturbances, from difficulty falling asleep to restless sleep. For more details on how to organize comfortable rest, read the article "Sleep during pregnancy".
