Night terrors in pregnant women
Overview
Nightmare dreams during pregnancy: What happens in sleep
Many women note that during pregnancy their dreams become extremely vivid, strange, and sometimes anxious and realistic, turning into nightmares. This is a common phenomenon that reflects the intense emotional and physiological activity occurring in your body and mind. Such dreams are not a "bad sign", but merely a way for the brain to process new information and experiences.
Why do dreams become so vivid?
- Hormonal influence: Pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, affect sleep cycles. They can increase the duration of the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase, during which we see the most vivid dreams. In addition, frequent nighttime awakenings lead to better recall of what you dreamed.
- Psychological processing: Pregnancy is a time of deep psychological changes. Your brain actively processes a huge amount of new information, hopes, fears, and anxieties. Dreams become an arena where these experiences are "played out" in symbolic form.
Typical themes of anxiety dreams in pregnant women
Pregnant women's nightmares often have recurring themes that reflect their subconscious fears:
- Dreams about danger to the baby: Forgetting the child, letting it fall, giving birth to a baby with anomalies.
- Dreams about personal incompetence: Fear of not being able to fulfill the role of mother.
- Dreams about labor: Anxious or strange birth scenarios.
- Dreams about partner betrayal or loss of attractiveness.
These dreams are a normal part of psychological adaptation to motherhood. Discussing them with a partner or psychologist can help reduce anxiety. Unlike night terrors, which occur in deep sleep, nightmares occur in the REM phase, and the person remembers them well.
