Circadian Rhythm Disruption in Pregnant Women
Overview
Incorrect Sleep Schedule During Pregnancy: Circadian Rhythm Disruptions
Pregnancy can seriously “reset” your internal biological clock. If you used to be a “morning person” and woke up easily, you may now feel like an “owl,” unable to fall asleep until after midnight. Or, conversely, your sleep may become completely chaotic and unpredictable. These schedule disturbances are a result of pregnancy’s impact on your circadian rhythms — internal 24‑hour cycles that regulate sleep and wakefulness.
What “breaks” the internal clock?
Several factors during pregnancy can lead to a desynchronization between your desired schedule and the body’s internal signals:
- Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in progesterone, estrogen, and melatonin levels can directly affect the sleep‑regulation center in the brain.
- Insomnia and sleep fragmentation: When you can’t fall asleep at night, it inevitably leads to daytime sleepiness and a desire to nap during the day. Daytime napping, in turn, can further complicate falling asleep the next night, creating a vicious cycle.
- Lifestyle changes: Going on maternity leave alters your usual social schedule, which can also “blur” the clear boundaries between day and night.
The result can be a condition resembling mild jet lag, where you feel tired and sleepy when you shouldn’t be, and alert when it’s time to rest. Practicing good sleep hygiene—trying to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time, getting enough daylight—helps maintain stable circadian rhythms.
