Fetal Development by Weeks

The journey from a single cell to a fully formed little person is perhaps nature's greatest miracle. Over 40 weeks, an incredibly complex yet beautiful process unfolds inside you, each day filled with amazing transformations. Observing fetal development by weeks is not just an interesting foray into biology. It is an opportunity to forge a deep connection with your child, better understand the changes in your own body, and consciously experience each stage of your pregnancy. Let's walk this exciting path together.

First Trimester (Weeks 1-13): Laying the Foundation of Life

This is the most important and dynamic period, when the foundations of all organs and systems are laid. Though your belly is still barely noticeable, a lot of work is happening inside.

  • 4-5 weeks: Your future baby is a tiny embryo, the size of a poppy seed. Its neural tube (future brain and spine) is already forming, and the cardiovascular system begins to develop.
  • 6-7 weeks: The first miracle visible on ultrasound occurs—the tiny heart starts beating! Buds of arms and legs appear, resembling small sprouts.
  • 9-10 weeks: The embryo officially becomes a fetus. It already has all the major organs, though they are very small. Joints, fingers, and eyelids form. It begins to move, although you may not feel it yet.
  • 12th week: The baby is now the size of a plum. Its face takes on human features, it learns to swallow and open its mouth. This week usually includes the first important prenatal screening.

By the end of the first trimester, risks decrease significantly, and your baby is already a fully formed, albeit miniature, copy of a human.

Second Trimester (Weeks 14–27): Time of Active Growth and Interaction

This is a period of rapid growth and refinement. Your baby not only increases in size but also begins to actively interact with the world.

  • 16th week: The skeleton begins to ossify, and the first hair (lanugo) appears on the head. The child can already hear—this is an ideal time to start talking to them and playing music.
  • 20th week: The equator of pregnancy! You will likely feel the first long-awaited movements. This is an incredible moment that strengthens your bond. Ultrasound can now determine the baby's sex with high probability.
  • 24th week: The baby's skin is still translucent, but fat begins to accumulate beneath it. The lungs develop, and it makes its first “practice” breathing movements, inhaling and exhaling amniotic fluid.

In the second trimester, you truly begin to feel your baby, and it feels you.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40+): Preparing for Independent Life

This is the final stretch. The baby's main task is to gain weight and fully ready all systems for functioning outside the mother's womb.

  • 28th week: The baby opens its eyes for the first time and can distinguish light from darkness. It sleeps actively and dreams.
  • 32nd week: The child already resembles a newborn, but continues to accumulate subcutaneous fat, which will help regulate body temperature. All organs, except the lungs, are almost fully mature.
  • 37th week: The pregnancy is considered full term! The lungs are ready for the first breath. The baby drops lower into the pelvis, preparing for labor.
