Prenatal Care (Visits, Gynecologist)

From the moment you see two lines on the test, a new, extremely important partner appears in your life — your gynecologist. Regular visits to them, or prenatal care, are not just a formality, but a fundamental foundation for a healthy course of your pregnancy and the birth of a healthy baby. It is a system of scheduled consultations, examinations and tests that allows you to monitor your condition and the child's development, detect possible risks in time, and receive qualified assistance and advice.

Why is prenatal care so important?

Regular monitoring by a doctor is your main tool for ensuring health and safety throughout all nine months. Its key objectives:

  • Monitoring the mother's health: Tracking weight, blood pressure and other indicators allows timely noticing signs of complications such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes.
  • Observing the child's development: The doctor listens to the heartbeat, measures the size of the uterus, and scheduled ultrasounds allow assessment of whether the fetal development matches the gestational age.
  • Prevention and early detection of problems: Scheduled screenings and tests help assess risks and, if needed, take necessary measures.
  • Informational and psychological support: Each visit is your opportunity to ask any questions, dispel fears, and receive professional advice on nutrition, lifestyle, and preparation for delivery.

First visit: the most important meeting

It is best to schedule the first visit to the gynecologist at 6–8 weeks of pregnancy (counting from the first day of the last menstrual period). This consultation is the longest and most informative. During it the doctor:

  1. Confirm the fact of pregnancy and its gestational age.
  2. Conduct a full examination and collect a detailed medical history (information about your health, past illnesses, heredity).
  3. Prescribe a set of necessary tests (blood, urine, for infections, etc.).
  4. Give the first recommendations, in particular regarding the mandatory intake of folic acid and lifestyle adjustments.
  5. Register you in the prenatal record and issue an exchange card — your main document for the coming months.

Visit schedule: how often should you see the doctor?

If the pregnancy proceeds without complications, the standard visit schedule in Ukraine usually looks like this:

  • In the first trimester (up to week 13): 1–2 times (registration and a visit after the first screening).
  • In the second trimester (weeks 14 to 27): Usually once a month.
  • In the third trimester (from week 28 until delivery): The frequency of visits increases. Initially once every 2 weeks, and after week 36 — weekly. This is necessary for more thorough monitoring of the baby's condition and your body's readiness for birth.

If certain risks or complications are present, the doctor may create an individual, more intensive schedule for you.

What happens at each scheduled visit?

Each routine consultation is an important check‑up that ensures everything is progressing as planned. A standard examination includes:

  • Weighing and monitoring weight gain.
  • Measuring blood pressure.
  • Urine test (for protein and sugar).
  • Measuring the height of the uterine fundus, which shows how your baby is growing.
  • Listening to the fetal heartbeat using a special device (Doppler), usually from week 10–12.
  • Discussing your well‑being and answering your questions.

Your role in prenatal care

Prenatal care is a partnership. Your active participation is extremely important.

  • Be honest and open. Do not hide any complaints, symptoms, or concerns from the doctor, even if they seem minor to you.
  • Prepare questions. Write down all questions that arise between visits so you don't forget to ask them.
  • Follow the recommendations. Adhere to the doctor's prescriptions regarding vitamin intake, nutrition, and lifestyle.

Remember, the goal of prenatal care is not to frighten you, but to provide support, knowledge, and confidence. This is your reliable path to a healthy pregnancy and a happy meeting with your baby.
