Animal allergies in pregnant women
Overview
Animal allergy during pregnancy: Features and risks
For many women, household pets are family members. Therefore, the onset or worsening of animal allergy during pregnancy can become a serious emotional and medical issue. It is important to understand that the allergy is caused not by fur, but by proteins found in the animal's saliva and dander, as described in the article "Pet allergies". Pregnancy can affect the course of this condition, and the condition itself requires a cautious approach to treatment.
How does pregnancy affect animal allergy?
As with other allergies, the "rule of thirds" applies here: the condition may improve, worsen, or remain unchanged. Worsening of symptoms is often linked to the fact that pregnancy itself causes "pregnancy rhinitis" (nasal congestion), and the allergic component only amplifies this condition. Moreover, animal allergy is one of the most powerful triggers of bronchial asthma, control of which during pregnancy is critically important.
Is the allergy dangerous for the unborn child?
The mother's allergy does not directly harm the child. However, it is important to remember two aspects:
- Treatment safety: The main risk is associated with the need to take medication. Not all antihistamines are safe, so any treatment must be prescribed by a doctor. This is discussed in detail in the article "Medications during pregnancy".
- Asthma control: If the allergy triggers asthma attacks, uncontrolled asthma in the mother can lead to fetal hypoxia (oxygen deficiency), which is dangerous.
In most cases, if the allergy is not severe, there is no need to part with the household pet. Measures to reduce allergen levels in the home (frequent cleaning, air purifiers, prohibiting the animal from entering the bedroom) can significantly alleviate symptoms.
