Latex allergy in pregnant women
Overview
Latex allergy during pregnancy: Heightened vigilance
Latex allergy is a reaction to proteins found in natural rubber. During pregnancy and childbirth a woman encounters latex products much more often than in everyday life, especially in medical settings (gloves, catheters). Therefore, for women who have this allergy or are at risk, this period requires special attention and communication with medical staff.
Why does the risk of contact increase?
Throughout pregnancy and delivery a woman undergoes numerous examinations and procedures where latex gloves are traditionally used. Vaginal exams, blood tests, labor—all are potential contacts with the allergen. For a woman with a severe IgE‑mediated allergy, such contact can trigger a dangerous systemic reaction, up to anaphylaxis.
Risk groups and the importance of informing
The high‑risk group includes:
- Women who already have a diagnosed latex allergy.
- Medical personnel.
- Women who have undergone many surgeries.
- Women allergic to certain fruits (bananas, avocado, kiwi) due to cross‑reactivity (the so‑called latex‑fruit syndrome).
It is critically important to inform your obstetrician and the birth‑center staff in advance about your latex allergy. This information should be entered into your medical record in large letters. In that case the facility must use alternative latex‑free materials (e.g., nitrile or vinyl gloves) for all procedures. You should note this in your birth plan.
