Drug allergies in pregnant women

Overview

Drug allergy during pregnancy: Double caution

Drug allergy is an unpredictable immune system reaction to a medical product. During pregnancy this issue becomes especially acute, because any allergic reaction and the need to treat it concern not only the woman but also the unborn child. Therefore the main principle in this period is maximum caution and avoiding taking any medication without a direct prescription from a doctor.

Why does this require special attention?

The seriousness of the problem lies in several aspects:

  • Risk to the mother: A severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, is life‑threatening in any circumstance.
  • Risk to the fetus: A systemic reaction in the mother (blood pressure drop, hypoxia) leads to impaired fetal blood supply, which can have serious consequences.
  • Diagnostic difficulty: Rash during pregnancy can be caused by hormonal changes, so it is not always easy to distinguish a drug side effect from pregnancy‑specific dermatoses.
  • Limited treatment options: Many drugs used to treat allergies are contraindicated.

Most common "culprit" drugs

During pregnancy women often need to take certain medications, some of which have an increased risk of causing an allergy. These include:

  • Antibiotics: Especially those of the penicillin class.
  • Non‑steroidal anti‑inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Ibuprofen, aspirin (which also have other contraindications in pregnancy).
  • Anesthetics: Both local and general.

If you have a history of reactions to certain drugs, be sure to inform your doctor. For general principles of medication safety, read the article "Drugs during pregnancy". For general mechanisms, read the article "Drug allergies".
