Food allergies in pregnant women

Overview

Food allergy in pregnant women: Safety above all

Food allergy during pregnancy is a condition that requires special attention, as caring for health now concerns two individuals. Pregnancy can both exacerbate an existing allergy and, in rare cases, trigger the development of a new one. The main principle for an expectant mother is to maximally avoid known allergens and to handle new foods cautiously.

How does pregnancy affect food allergy?

The immune system of a pregnant woman undergoes changes that can affect reactions to food products in various ways. While most women do not notice significant changes, some may experience increased sensitivity. It is important to remember that food allergy in the mother is not directly transmitted to the child, but a genetic predisposition to atopic reactions is inherited.

Does allergy harm the child?

Food allergens themselves usually do not cross the placental barrier. The danger to the child comes not from the food itself, but from a systemic allergic reaction in the mother. A severe reaction, such as anaphylaxis, is accompanied by a sudden drop in blood pressure, bronchial spasm, and hypoxia in the mother. This, in turn, leads to acute oxygen deficiency in the fetus, which is extremely dangerous. Therefore, a woman with a known severe allergy must be especially cautious.

Cross-reactivity and hidden allergens

It is important to remember cross-reactivities. For example, with seasonal allergy to birch pollen, a reaction may occur to apples, carrots, or nuts. One should also carefully examine product ingredients to avoid hidden allergens. This approach is part of the overall safe‑eating strategy described in the article on food poisoning risk.
