Allergies to Insect Bites in Pregnant Women
Overview
Allergy to Insect Bites in Pregnant Women: Risks and Tactics
The reaction to an insect bite (especially bees, wasps, hornets) can range from a mild local reaction to severe systemic anaphylaxis. During pregnancy this issue requires special attention, as a severe allergic reaction in the mother poses a serious threat to the fetus. It is important to understand the risks and know the correct action algorithm.
Local vs. Systemic Reaction
It is important to distinguish two types of reactions:
- Large local reaction: Strong swelling, redness, and pain that spread over a sizable area around the bite site. Although it looks alarming, this reaction is usually not life‑threatening for the mother or child, unless the bite occurs on the neck or face.
- Systemic allergic reaction (anaphylaxis): This is the most dangerous type. The reaction affects the whole body and develops very quickly. Symptoms include hives over the entire body, swelling of the lips and tongue, difficulty breathing, and a drop in blood pressure.
Why is anaphylaxis especially dangerous during pregnancy?
Anaphylactic shock in the mother leads to a sudden drop in arterial blood pressure (hypotension) and bronchial spasm (hypoxia). This means that blood flow to the uterus and placenta deteriorates critically, and the fetus begins to suffer from acute oxygen deprivation. This condition requires immediate, emergency medical care and administration of adrenaline.
Women who are aware of their propensity for severe allergic reactions to bites should discuss an action plan with their doctor for a bite incident and consider carrying an adrenaline auto‑injector. Prevention should be the foundation: avoiding areas with high insect activity, using repellents approved for pregnant women.
