Partnered Births

The birth of a child is one of the most intimate, powerful, and transformative moments in a family's life. More and more couples in Ukraine are choosing to go through this journey together. Partnered birth is a practice where, during labor, the woman is accompanied not only by medical staff but also by a close person: most often the husband, but it can also be the mother, sister, or a doula. It is not just a trendy fad, but an evidence‑based approach that improves the birth experience for both the mother and the whole family, laying the foundation for a deep emotional bond from the first minutes of the baby's life.

What exactly are partnered births?

The presence of a partner during labor is far more than just "holding a hand." It is active participation and comprehensive support that includes several key roles:

  • Emotional support: Being present, soothing, praising, reminding about breathing, creating a sense of safety and love. This is the most important role, because emotional support reduces stress levels and helps the woman relax.
  • Physical assistance: Massaging the lower back during contractions, helping change positions, offering water, wiping the face with a cool towel.
  • Information mediator (advocate): Helping the woman communicate with medical staff, asking questions she might forget, and reminding about items from the birth plan.
  • Witness of the miracle: Being the first person, together with the mother, to greet the new family member, cut the umbilical cord, and etch this unique moment into memory.

Benefits of partnered births: what does science say?

Numerous studies demonstrate that the presence of a partner during labor has a positive impact:

  • Reduced need for medication pain relief.
  • Decreased likelihood of complications and the need for a cesarean section.
  • Shortened overall labor duration.
  • The woman feels greater control over the process and higher satisfaction with the experience.
  • Emotional bond in the couple strengthens and early father‑infant attachment forms.

How to prepare for partnered births: a checklist for the couple

The success of partnered births is 90% dependent on quality joint preparation.

  1. Make a joint and conscious decision

It should be a voluntary desire of both. If the husband feels panic or categorically does not want to be present, pressure can only cause harm. Discuss your expectations and concerns openly.

  2. Gain knowledge together

Fear is born from the unknown. The best way to overcome it is to study the process.

    • Attend courses for future parents: This is a mandatory item. It is there that the partner will acquire practical skills: breathing techniques, massage methods, understand the stages of labor and how he can help at each of them.
    • Read and watch together: Study information, watch videos about labor. This will help form a realistic picture of the process.
  3. Discuss and create a birth plan

Jointly drafting a birth plan will help the partner better understand your wishes and become your “voice” in the delivery room.

  4. Prepare legally and organizationally (Ukrainian realities)

    • Clarify the rules of the maternity hospital: Most public maternity hospitals in Ukraine support partnered births. Find out which documents are required from the partner.
    • Gather the necessary documents and tests for the partner:
      • Passport.
      • Recent chest X‑ray (taken no more than a year ago).
      • Sometimes results of COVID‑19 or other infection tests may be required. Clarify this in advance.
    • Prepare a "partner’s bag": clean change of clothes (comfortable pants, t‑shirt), washable slippers, water, snack (nuts, bars), phone, power bank.
  5. Be flexible

Remember that labor may not go according to plan. The partner’s main task is not to control the process but to adapt to the situation and provide continuous support. If something goes wrong and an emergency cesarean section is needed, the partner’s support outside the operating room will be equally important.

Partnered births are an incredibly deep and unifying experience. It is an opportunity for the man not just to be a spectator but to become an active participant in the birth of his child. Joint preparation, mutual trust and love will help you navigate this journey as a true team, and this experience will forever remain one of the most precious pages in your family’s story.
