Packing the bag for the maternity hospital

Packing a bag for the maternity hospital is a true ritual that marks the final stretch of pregnancy. This process helps the expectant mother mentally prepare for labor, feel in control and confident. To avoid panic and chaotic packing during early contractions, we recommend preparing everything in advance. The ideal time for this is the 32-36 week of pregnancy, because after week 37 labor can start at any moment. We have compiled a comprehensive checklist tailored to Ukrainian realities that will help you forget nothing.

The most convenient packing method is to divide all items into 3-4 separate bags (many maternity hospitals require clear washing bags): for the delivery room, for the postpartum room, for the baby, and for discharge.

Bag #1: "Urgent folder" with documents

This is the most important bag, which should always be with you during the final weeks of pregnancy. Put all documents into a single folder.

  • Passport (original and several copies).
  • Exchange card, signed at the chosen maternity hospital.
  • Results of all analyses and ultrasounds, that are not attached to the exchange card.
  • Identification code (IPN) (original and copy).
  • Marriage certificate (copy), if you are married.
  • Contract with the maternity hospital or doctor (if any).
  • For partnered births: partner's passport, fluorography, and other required documents (check with your maternity hospital).

Bag #2: Items for the delivery room

These are items you will need directly during labor.

  • Clothing for you: 1-2 nightgowns or long T‑shirts made of natural fabric, a robe, washing slippers (mandatory!).
  • Water and snack: Several small bottles of still water with a sports cap (easy to drink from), a light snack for energy (dry biscuits, dried fruit, energy bars). For the partner – also.
  • Comfort and hygiene: Lip balm (lips dry a lot from breathing), thermal water, wet wipes, disposable pads (60×90 cm, 5-10 pcs).
  • For entertainment and relaxation: Phone, power bank, headphones with your favorite music.
  • First clothing for the baby: 1-2 "onesies" or a set (bodysuit, footed pants), a hat without ties, socks, 1-2 Newborn‑size diapers, a pad.

Bag #3: Items for the postpartum room

These items will be needed by you and the baby during the 2-3 days stay in the maternity hospital.

For mom:

  • Clothing: 2-3 nightgowns with nursing access, a robe, socks.
  • Hygiene: Postpartum pads (maximum absorbency, 2 packs), disposable mesh panties (very convenient, 5-7 pcs), towels, toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel, breast pads.
  • For breastfeeding: Nursing bras (2 pcs), nipple cream (e.g., with lanolin, does not need washing).
  • Comfort: Cup, cutlery, postpartum belly band (optional, after consulting a doctor).

For baby:

  • Diapers: Pack of Newborn size (2-5 kg) or "1".
  • Clothing: 4-5 onesies or sets (bodysuit + footed pants), several hats and socks, scratch mittens.
  • Pads: 3-4 cotton and 2-3 flannel.
  • Hygiene: Wet wipes (0+), liquid baby soap or bath wash, digital thermometer, cotton pads, nasal aspirator.

Bag #4: For discharge

This bag can be packed later; relatives can bring it on the day of discharge.

  • Clothing for mom: Choose comfortable clothes that you wore around the 5-6 month of pregnancy, as the belly does not disappear immediately.
  • Clothing for baby: A nice set appropriate for the season. In winter – a warm jumpsuit, hat, swaddle or blanket.
  • Car seat: **This is the most important item!** Child safety in the car is paramount. Be sure to install a car seat‑crib (category 0+) in advance.

Packing the bag is a great way to visualize the future and do something concrete to bring the long‑awaited meeting closer. Check the list with your maternity hospital, as some facilities may have specific requirements. Wishing you an easy labor!
