Allergies to animals in mother
Overview
Animal allergy in mother after childbirth
Allergy to household pets can first appear or worsen after delivery due to immune and hormonal changes. This creates a complex situation, as the woman has to cope with allergy symptoms while caring for the newborn.
Mechanism and symptoms
Allergy is caused not by fur but by proteins found in the animal's dander, saliva, and urine. Symptoms are usually respiratory: nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, and in severe cases—exacerbation of asthma. Skin reactions are also possible, such as hives.
What to do?
Getting rid of the animal is a last resort. First, try to reduce the allergen load in the home as much as possible:
- Create a "pet-free zone": Do not allow the animal into the bedroom, especially the bed.
- Use HEPA filters in air purifiers and vacuum cleaners.
- Frequent wet cleaning and washing of textiles.
Regarding medication, a doctor's consultation is required to select drugs compatible with breastfeeding. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Animal allergies".
