Food Allergies in Mother

Overview

Food Allergies in Mother After Childbirth

The onset of a new food allergy or the worsening of an existing one in the mother after childbirth can be linked to the remodeling of the immune system. However, the main concern is often not the mother's condition itself, but the possible impact on the breastfed infant.

How Do Food Allergens from the Mother Affect the Baby?

Proteins from the foods the mother consumes pass into breast milk. If the baby has a genetic predisposition, its immature immune system may react to these proteins, leading to symptoms of food allergy in infants (rash, digestive problems). It is important to understand: this is the child's allergy, not the mother's.

Elimination Diet

If there is suspicion that the baby is reacting to something in your diet, the “gold standard” for diagnosis is an elimination diet under medical supervision. The mother eliminates the most likely allergen for 2–4 weeks (most often — cow's milk protein). If the baby's condition improves, this confirms the link. This does not mean that breastfeeding must be stopped, only that dietary adjustment is needed. Read about the general mechanisms in the article "Food Allergies".
