Seasonal allergies in mother

Overview

Seasonal allergies in mother after childbirth (Pollinosis)

Seasonal pollen allergy (pollinosis) can return or worsen after delivery. Symptoms — runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes — can significantly worsen the wellbeing of an already exhausted mother.

Features of pollinosis in the postpartum period

The main challenge is treatment compatible with breastfeeding. Many antihistamine drugs and nasal sprays pass into breast milk and may not be recommended. Self‑medication is strictly prohibited.

Safe relief methods

Until consulting a doctor who will select a compatible medication, the focus is on non‑pharmacological methods:

  • Limiting contact with the allergen: Keep windows closed, use air purifiers.
  • Nasal irrigation: Regular nasal rinsing with saline solutions helps mechanically wash pollen from the mucous membrane.
  • Hygiene: Take a shower and wash hair after returning from outdoors to remove pollen from skin and hair.

Be sure to consult an allergist and your child's pediatrician regarding safe treatment options. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Seasonal allergies".
