Environmental allergies in mother

Overview

Environmental allergies in mother after childbirth

After the baby is born, the woman spends significantly more time at home than before. This can lead to a worsening of environmental allergy symptoms to household allergens such as dust mites, mold, cockroaches.

Why can symptoms worsen?

Increased time of contact with the allergen is the main reason. In addition, against the background of hormonal changes and fatigue the immune system may become more reactive. Symptoms (chronic runny nose, nasal congestion, cough) can intensify, and control over accompanying asthma may deteriorate.

What to do?

Since treatment during lactation is limited, environmental control measures come to the forefront:

  • Regular wet cleaning.
  • Use of air purifiers with HEPA filters.
  • Laundering bedding at high temperatures.
  • Humidity control to prevent mold growth.

These measures help reduce the concentration of allergens in the air and alleviate symptoms. For general mechanisms read the article "Environmental allergies".
