Allergic reactions in the mother

Overview

Allergic reactions in the mother after childbirth

The postpartum period is a time of "resetting" the immune system. During pregnancy the immunity was physiologically altered to avoid rejecting the fetus. After delivery it returns to its usual state, and this process can be unpredictable. Some women notice that allergies that have troubled them for years suddenly disappear, while others, on the contrary, encounter allergic reactions for the first time.

Why does the immune response change?

The immune system returning to "post‑pregnancy" state can temporarily become overly reactive. This can lead to worsening of existing allergies or the emergence of new ones. This process is amplified by stress, sleep deprivation and general fatigue, which are inseparable companions of the first months of motherhood. Main types of reactions:

  • Food allergies: New reaction to familiar food.
  • Seasonal allergies: Intensification of pollen symptoms.
  • Contact dermatitis: Skin may become more sensitive to cosmetics, metals.

The main challenge is the safety of treatment during breastfeeding. Any use of antihistamine medications must be coordinated with a doctor. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Allergic reactions".
