Allergies to insect bites in mother
Overview
Allergy to insect bites in the mother after childbirth
Allergic reaction to insect bites (bees, wasps) in a nursing mother requires a cautious approach to treatment. Although the allergy itself does not affect the baby, the medications used to treat it can pass into breast milk.
Action plan
- In case of a local reaction (swelling, redness) a cold compress is usually sufficient. Use of topical antihistamine or hormonal ointments is possible only on small skin areas and after consulting a doctor.
- In case of a systemic reaction (hives) the doctor may prescribe antihistamine drugs compatible with breastfeeding.
- Anaphylaxis (severe systemic reaction) is a life‑threatening condition and requires immediate administration of adrenaline. In this case, saving the mother's life is the absolute priority.
Women who are aware of their tendency to severe allergic reactions to bites should carry an adrenaline auto‑injector and discuss an action plan with their doctor. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Allergies to insect bites".
